Place 3-5 UV-sensitive beads in two small plastic bags. These beads will turn color in the presence of UV light. The higher the intensity of UV light the stronger the color change. Make two bags: one labeled “Control” and one labeled “Experiment”. Record the color of the beads when exposed to indoor light (lighting in the lab).

UPF refers to how much UV radiation, both UVB and UVA, a certain fabric allows to reach your skin. If you’re wearing a fabric that has UPF 50, it will block 98% of harmful rays from the sun. Two Nylon and polyester are both flammable, but each reacts differently to fire: nylon melts before burning, whereas polyester melts and burns at the same time. UV-A radiation is less damaging to humans than UV-B radiation, but it is much more prevalent. Whereas UV-B radiation can be blocked by glass and some clouds, UV-A radiation can pass through them. Sunscreens may not afford adequate protection against UV-A radiation. UV-A radiation is responsible for tanning; UV-B for sunburn.
In general, the best window film for plants offers 25% light transmittance or higher. Highly reflective or high opacity films may block more than that and should not be used for windows you plan on keeping potted plants near. However, most window films fall above 25% transmittance and let in plenty of natural sunlight.
Ultraviolet light comes in a whole range of wavelengths: UVA light has longer wavelengths, while UVB light has shorter wavelengths. Sunscreen molecules with a small number of conjugated bonds do a better job of absorbing shorter-wavelength UV light–in other words, UVB light. For example, octinoxate absorbs UVB light better than UVA light. 2,3
The main challenge associated with manufacturing ultraviolet (UV) optics is that surface tolerances must be much tighter than those of visible and IR optics.
