Every job has a randomly generated per kilometre 'maintenance' cost calculated upon completion on top of the driver's fixed payment per delivery and per kilometre. Those numbers can be found in the save game profit logs. It doesn't happen often but occasionally even higher than level 36 drivers will fail to make money if that maintenance figure
Part of the problem may be with the way freight market jobs are generated for hired drivers. Right now we have plenty of instances where "Driver X couln't find a job and had to return home empty" after an internal game-determined downtime limit. Letting the hired drivers roam more than just out-and-back only makes it more complicated.

I purchase the garage, then 3 x trucks, then hire 3 x drivers in that order. I don't bother too much about the rating of the driver, but I do look for one with at least 1 level of long distance. If I can't afford all 3 trucks at the one time, I purchase garage, truck, driver in that order, then add truck & driver later as money becomes available.
ME : no truck for myself, because I will just do QUICK jobs. If you have two trucks just assign/reallocate them to two drivers. You of course have to buy a personal truck first, but you can reallocate that to a hired driver whenever you like - it will leave you in a slot with no truck. If you have three trucks and two drivers, just sell the
